I love a good user interface - But what's happening to the human interface?

in

I've seen way too much of this in the past little while. As companies and institutions adopt a more technological approach to solving problems the human interface to things is quickly disappearing. Here are two situations I've encountered in the past few days, and I've been giving them some thought.

The Mosquito - Huh? What?

Convert documents to PDF

A friend asked me today if there was a tool that would convert files/documents to PDF. I've been asked this question before, so I though I'd answer it for everyone.

There are a few free utilities out there - I'm talking about the free ones only because they are for personal use where you don't need a licence.

Facebook Chat - Not too bad

Facebook ChatWhen it was first introduced, I was wondering why in the world Facebook would incorporate a chat feature. Over the past 2 years, Facebook has gone from light and fun to heavy and repetitive. By adding yet another 'application'/functionality, they were just bogging things down even further.

I didn't care to use it at first, but now I'm using it quite a bit. The main reason is that when I see a friend online, it find it better to just send a chat message and get a live response - most of the time.

Too much security - Lots more hastle

So, just a few minutes ago, I was trying to access my online banking. I put in the card number and the proper password, but for more security it asked me one of the secret questions. Fair enough... but thing thing I didn't know was that the answer was case-sensitive.

That in my opinion is bad.. because when you set the answer to the questions 2 years ago, do you really remember whether you had said "soccer" or "Soccer" (that is not the answer to my favourite sport question btw - :D)

It kicked me out and asked me to try again.. Fine, it asked me the same security question again, but this time it locked me out.

The Past and The Future

in

Yes, it's been a really long time since I posted anything. I'll blame it on a busy summer packed full of exciting yet time consuming adventures.

I wanted to put my mind at ease and not feel as guilty about having only 2 posts in June and 2 in July... So I've compiled a list of things I've done in the past two months...

Send Online SMS to Rogers, Bell, Fido and Telus

A few months ago, when I had to send a text message (SMS) to someone, I would simply type in 'rogers sms' or 'bell sms' into Google , and the first hit would be that page.

Both companies have since redesigned their sites and it's becoming harder to find their SMS pages. You have to drill down into their menus and pages to find these. So to save time I thought I'd post all the links here:
