GMail

Google Themes - Amazing After 4 years of the plain old blue and white, the natively supported themes section of Gmail is a huge welcome. It's about time guys and great job with the themes.

It also looks like they tried to please everyone. For the hackers among us, we have the Terminal Theme and for the kids, there is the Candy Theme. All the themes are very well thought out, creative  and again, a sight for sore eyes. I was starting to think  that they had given up on aesthetics and were aiming purely for functionality...not that it's a bad thing, but you shouldn't overlook the visual aspect of a great application either.

I'm loving these themes, and I'm sure it's a matter of time before we are able to create our own themes, with custom pictures and colours.

Also, with the introduction of Video and Audio chat, Gmail is leaving the other mail 'websites' in the dust. When you bundle all these into a package that is also tightly knit with Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Reader, it's a great recipe for success.

Keep up the good work Google...

Gmail Attachment Bug

Google keeps adding new functionalities to GMail and that’s great, but how about fixing what you broke?

Before the new Gmail v2 release, if you clicked on ‘download’ for an attachment, it would open in a new window. Now what happens is that Gmail uses the same window and navigates to a blank page which give you the download pop-up from your browser. If you click on the back button hoping to go back to your inbox…nothing happens!! Only way to go back to your inbox is by typing in the url. Your session is still alive, so you will still be logged in.

Google started a trend a few years ago, where everything they released was a beta. This meant that you could use the software as you like, but at your own risk. If you stored data in GMail while it was in beta, you cannot hold GMail/Google responsible if it gets lots, errased or causes any damage to anyone or anything.

So, finally after years and years of people asking Google/Gmail for IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) functionality, it has been released. Google Mail through IMAP.

I'm not quite sure why someone would want to do this, but it is now available.
